Lady Gaga – Telephone as pop culture gold

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t like Lady Gaga’s music. It’s really not my taste. What I like more is her astute handling of popular culture and fame, rather than her ability to hold a tune. Her music video, Telephone, is a nine minute opus glorifying Americana, kitch and controversy. It includes references to Queer Eye for the Straight guy, Porn Stars, Wonder Woman, Tarantino – Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction, Thelma and Louise, Michael Jackson, and a quick dig at other pop starlets.

Gaga's gaming references

References to games and sci-fi

Interestingly enough they give winks to gaming and geek culture, with nods to Star Wars, Dune, Command and Conquer and DOOM.

It also has, of course, plenty of product placement, some of it so explicit that it’s a pretty much a parody of placements in other pop videos:, miracle whip, Coke, Wonderbread and Virgin mobile.

The real star of this cultural train smash is director Jonas Åkerlund. Jonas has been directing since 1988 and is the mind behind other controversial pieces such as Madonna’s American Life – pulled due to anti-US sentiment after 9/11 and Rammstein’s Pussy(NSFW) – featuring the band members engaging in hardcore porno. I wonder what will come from this man’s fevered brain next?
